Modena hosts the first natural gas fueling station with cryogenic technology in Europe dedicated to public transport busses. SETA, the local public transport company, is the first - and so far, only - public transport company to have installed a highly efficient system that storing natural gas and supplying rapidly more than 60 buses in the fleet powered by this fuel.

The recently opened fuelling station will contribute to reducing fuel purchase costs, speed up fuelling time, and make more cost-effective and widespread use of buses with low environmental impact. Such infrastructure can as well pave the way to a large use of biomethane for public transport.

The total investment supported by SETA, amounted to more than 1.3 million Euros. Currently the SETA CNG bus fleet amounts to 63 busses operating in Modena and 19 in Piacenza (out of a total of 867 vehicles). Between 2016-2018 the purchase of several other low environmental impact vehicles is foreseen: the first three buses were presented at the opening of the new fuelling station. Vehicles are "Urbino 12" model produced by the Polish Solaris, which will enter service on the urban network of Modena from the month of January 2016.
