In december 2013, as a result of the agreement between three Minstries (Environment, Agrigulture and Economic Development), the long awaited Italian Biomethane Decree was finally signed. This decree defines the incentives for biomethane production depending on its final use as transport fuel, for CHP or for grid injection. It is estimated that these incentives will drive investments for about 2 billion euros in the coming 5 years. However, the Decree temporarily excludes from the incentives biomethane produced from biogas derived from anearobic wastewater treatment plants, undifferentiated organic waste, and landfill biogas until a specific European norm will be defined. These biomethane sources have been use since decades in other European countries for biomethane production and its gird injection.
